Top 3 Reasons Your Delta VFD is Tripping (And How to Fix It)

When your Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) trips, your production line stops. Every minute of downtime costs your factory money.

Delta VFDs are incredibly reliable, but like any electronic industrial hardware, they will eventually throw an error code to protect your motor from severe damage. If you are staring at a blinking red fault code on your drive right now, don't panic.

Here is a quick troubleshooting guide from the automation experts at Sigmatech to help you understand the most common Delta VFD faults and how to get your machine running again. here...

1. Error Code: "oc" (Overcurrent)

An Overcurrent fault is one of the most common reasons a drive will trip. This means the drive is outputting more current than it is rated to handle.

  • What to check: First, check if the motor is mechanically jammed or overloaded. Next, inspect the motor wiring and cables for any short circuits or grounding issues.

  • The quick fix: Try increasing the acceleration time (if the load is too heavy during startup) or reducing the load on the motor.

2. Error Code: "ov" (Overvoltage)

An Overvoltage fault happens when the DC bus voltage inside the drive gets too high.

  • What to check: This usually occurs when a heavy load is decelerating too quickly. The motor acts like a generator and feeds power back into the drive. You should also check your incoming facility power for voltage spikes.

  • The quick fix: Increase the deceleration time in the drive's parameters. If your machine requires rapid stopping, you may need to install an external braking resistor.

3. Error Code: "oH" (Overheat)

If the drive gets too hot, the internal thermal sensor will trip the "oH" fault to prevent the internal electronics from melting.

  • What to check: Open your control panel. Is the ambient temperature too high? Are the cooling fans on the VFD spinning? Is the drive's heatsink clogged with factory dust, oil, or debris?

  • The quick fix: Clean out the panel, ensure proper ventilation, and replace the VFD cooling fans if they have failed.

When to Call an Expert

While some faults can be fixed by tweaking a parameter or clearing out dust, constant tripping usually points to a failing drive, degraded motor insulation, or a deeper PLC programming issue. Continuing to reset a tripping drive without finding the root cause will eventually destroy your motor.
